Members of the eight organized community development clubs in Macon County play a vital role in many community-wide projects.

Health Services

Macon County has up-to-date medical facilities - including two hospitals, a county health center, a sports medicine facility specializing in orthopedics, a rehabilitation center and two nursing home facilities, with the Highlands-Cashiers Hospital also providing services in that field. Home health care is also available.

Angel Medical Center:
Angel Medical Center (AMC), located at 197 Riverview St. in Franklin, is a multi-purpose acute health facility that has been serving the residents of Macon and surrounding counties for more than 70 years. With 59 beds, AMC is a full service hospital that is affiliated with the Mission St. Joseph's Health system in Asheville, NC and accredited by the Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.

AMC also operates Angel Urgent Care Center (AUCC), Angel Medical AnswerLine and the Angel Home Health and Hospice.

The staff of AUCC treats non-emergent medical problems when your regular doctor is unavailable. The center also offers occupational health screenings, drug testing, and services for area employers.

The Urgent Care Center is located at 195 Franklin Plaza, on 441 S., and is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. No appointment necessary. For more information, call 369-4427

Angel Medical AnswerLine is a free telephone service, staffed by nurses 24 hours a day. The staff assesses symptoms and provides health information and  physician, hospital or community service referral. The number is 828-524-4455.

Highlands-Cashiers Hospital
Highlands-Cashiers Hospital, located on Hwy. 64 East between Highlands and Cashiers, is a not-for-profit hospital which has offered quality care and personal attention to the people of Macon County for more than 50 years. The hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic services and state-of-the-art equipment.

Macon County Health Center
The Macon County Health Center provides a wide range of services, most of which is available for everyone, regardless of income.
The public health center also offers a number of clinics each month. All of these clinics are offered by appointment only and income guidelines apply.

HealthWorks - The Rehabilitation Center
HealthWorks, located at 235 Jim Berry Rd. just off 441 N., is a private, outpatient physical rehabilitation clinic. Specializing in occupational, sports and general orthopaedic injury rehabilitation, Healthworks provides professionally supervised individualized physical therapy services.
Because HealthWorks is a specialty clinic, patients are accepted on a referral basis from medical physicians. For more information, telephone 369-7878.

Franklin Orthopaedic Specialists
Franklin Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Clinic, located at 2255 Old Murphy Rd. in Franklin, is a modern, full service orthopedic clinic with in-house x-ray equipment. The four orthopedic surgeons on staff are all board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery. The surgeons provide 24 hour, 365 days a year on-call coverage for all types of musculoskeletal emergencies.

Britthaven of Franklin
Located on the Old Murphy Rd. in Franklin, Britthaven is a 200-bed nursing facility. The firm is North Carolina licensed, and certified for Medicare and Medicaid, Veterans Administration and managed care organizations.

Grandview Manor Care Center
Located on Crisp St. in Franklin, Grandview Manor has been offering assisted living care in Macon County since 1968. The facility is a privately-owned, 52-bed home, and is licensed by the State of North Carolina.

Macon County Public Library
The Macon County Public Library is a member of the three-county Fontana Regional Library System. It features a 60,000 volume collection that also includes videos and books on tape. It also offers computers for public access as well as access to the Internet.

Nantahala Community Library
Located on the grounds of Nantahala School, this small branch library is part of the Nantahala Family Resource Center and home to Macon Program for Progress Early Head Start Program and health department services for the Nantahala community.

Utility Information

Nantahala Power & Light Company:
To have power connected to a new home or apartment, you must visit the power company's office and make an application in person. For new renters, the utility requires a deposit, a letter of credit from a past utility company, or a letter from a guarantor that NP&L finds satisfactory. No deposit is required from new homeowners.
An NP&L spokesman suggests that part-time residents leave the power turned on during the months they are away (if less than one year), and pay a minimum monthly fee.

GTE North Carolina:
Provides voice and data telecommunications products and services for more than 17,000 Macon County residents. You may apply for telephone service, rent a phone, pay your telephone bill, or get additional information at the Franklin office, located at 49 East Main St., or contact GTE at the following numbers:

Business hours at the Franklin office are 9:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Water/Waste Management:
Located at 188 West Main St., in the Franklin Town Office building, or telephone 524-2516. Renters are charged a $15.00 water deposit. New connections require a tap fee and are charged on a case by case basis. New residents with existing connections are not charged a tap fee.
Many part-time residents leave their water meters in over the winter and pay a small monthly charge. Some prefer to have the meter pulled when leaving for the winter and then reconnected upon returning. The fee for reconnection is $50.00 inside city limits and $75.00 outside the city limits.

Garbage Collection:
Garbage collection is provided in the city limits by the Town of Franklin, 188 West Main St., telephone 524-2516. Fees are $5.00 per month residential. For recycling information and garbage disposal in the county, contact Macon County landfill, at 349-2077. The landfill is located on Lakeside Dr. and several convenience centers are located throughout the county. Privately-owned companies offer garbage collection outside city limits.

Mediacom Cable TV:
To be eligible for cable TV, your home must be in one of the firm's specific service areas. The cable office is located on West Main St., Franklin; to apply for service, call or visit the office during normal business hours. Telephone 369-9549

Toccoa Natural Gas:
Toccoa Natural Gas is currently in the process of making taps and getting customers connected. The local office is located at 291 Westgate Plaza and is open Monday-Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on receiving natural gas piped directly into your home or business, contact Toccoa Natural Gas at 828-349-1222.
